The work-up of hoarseness or change in voice quality
often requires an experienced team with state-of-the
art medical equipments and tools. Among these the most
common diagnostic tests and facilities available at
the SVC include the following:
1-
Laryngeal-Video-endostroboscopy: A
test that will allow you to study the behavioral pattern
of the vocal fold by converting the fast vibratory movement
of the vocal cords into a slow movement, enabling the
physician to detect any subtle abnormality in the vocal
cords leading to hoarseness.
2- Fiberoptic nasopharngoscopy and laryngoscopy:
A test that will allow you to examine all the laryngeal
and pharyngeal anatomy and biomechanical properties.
3- Acoustic acoustic analysis:
A test that extracts objectively the salient features
of speech and vocal signal.
4- Upper airflow measures:
This test measures the subglottic pressure, mean flow
rate, peak expiratory flow, glottal efficiency, and
other parameters. The usefulness is mainly in patients
with obstructive lesions of the upper airway and need
surgical intervention.
5-
Pulmonary function test, i.e. spirometry:
This test will give us the vital capacity, FEV1 and
other parameters. This is of value in measuring the
breathing capacity of an individual and in detecting
subclinical and clinical asthma, which is often undiagnosed.
6- Audiometry and tympanometry: Test
for hearing since many patients with vocal problems,
especially singers and musicians have a hearing deficit
at a specific frequency.
